Lower left back pain is a wide-spread malady these days. It causes severe agony and pain to the sufferers.  There are several factors that cause it.

1. Herniated disc

Our lumber spine contains discs which act like cushions between the bones. As we grow old, the discs become flat, weak and less cushiony. Their outer part may tear up letting the inside of the disc to push through it and press on the nerve located around it. If this happens the patient feels severe pain shooting down through one or both the legs.

When the disc thus sticks out, it is called herniated, bulged, ruptured or slipped disc.

2. Spinal deterioration

Age is another name for deterioration or the wear and tear of the physiological functions. One such deterioration occurs in the spine which causes the narrowing of the spinal canal. We start feeling stiff and are unable to bend without feeling pain in the lower back.

3. Accidental factors

We can neither anticipate nor control traumatic accidents, causation of kidney stones, irritable bowel syndrome, infections or injuries during sports and physical workouts.  All these conditions and many more may cause lower left back pain despite best precautions.

Tips for preventing and treating lower left back pain

Most causes of lower back left pain can be substantially controlled or eliminated if we make a few simple changes in our daily routine.

1.  Take regular Exercises

Regular exercises like walking and swimming can keep your back flexible and healthy.

2.  Maintain right posture

Most of our work involves sitting over long periods whether we are working in our office or driving a car. Sometimes we get so much involved in our work, that we become careless in maintaining the right posture.

It is always advisable to take a break from a continued sitting by standing, walking or stretching for a short while.

3. Keep your back straight. Avoid lifting a heavy object by bending your lower back over it.

4.  Avoid wearing high heeled shoes. The heel size should preferably be one inch or even lower.

Most people who suffer from chronic back pain wake up every day with morning back pain. They are quite well when they go to bed, but wake up with pain in the back. Usually the pain occurs at a specific area or point in the back. But it may also occur in the lower left side or middle back.  Some people feel stiffness in the neck or upper back.

Causes

1. Defective bed

In most cases the bed is the culprit for morning back pain. The mattress does not provide the support that your back needs. Sometimes it is too cushiony and may arch your back inwards. In other cases, it may be very thin and cause stiffness in your back.

2. Wrong posture

Some people sleep with wrong postures. Instead of lying straight, they form curves especially when they lie on their sides.  There are others who are not satisfied with one pillow under the head. They need two pillows. This may cause pain in the neck.

3. Lack of oxygen

Morning back pain may occur due to the short supply of oxygen at night. This often occurs with sports persons and athletes.  Since they exercise hard during the day, their muscles, nerves and ligaments get lots of oxygen.  Their bodies get accustomed to stay at a certain level of oxygen supply.

The same quantity cannot be maintained during the night because of the lack of exercise. This problem is often faced by long distance runners. This is the reason that they experience cramps in their legs during the final stages of the race.

Treatment

1. Do some stretching exercise before going to bed. It will enable your body to adjust itself in the right direction during the night.
2. Try to sleep in the right posture so that no part of the body feels strain.
3. If you have a history of severe back pain, you must consult your physician for its treatment.

Next to sleeping, a large majority of people these days spend their time sitting before the computers. This is the main reason that they suffer from lower back pain.

The problem arises when people sit in wrong postures. Most of the time they slouch forward as they look upon the computer screen, type on the keyboard or work out the mouse.

How does the lower back pain occur?

When you round your back while slouching, you exert greater pressure on the ligaments, bones, joints, vertebral discs and muscles of the lower back. A sustained pressure on these components of the spine makes them weak. It also wears out the discs, the shock absorbing cushions of the spinal column, and pushes them out of their place.  A pushed out disc is called herniated, slipped or bulged disc.

As the disc tears out, it presses against or pinches the roots of the nerve that is located close to it.  The affected nerve that runs down the lower back, hips, thighs, knees, legs and feet causes shooting pains.

 Why do we slouch?

There are two main reasons we slouch. One is that we get tired sitting in erect posture over a time and bend forward to ease out the tension. The second and the more important reason is that the chairs we sit in have round or concave back.

They make us bend forward even if we do not wish to. They force our back to align with their roundness. It assumes the shape of a bow or a hammock. This puts greater weight on the base of the discs in the lower part of the spine.

Apart from sitting in the office chairs, we also have to sit in cars and planes. While it is not possible to stand up in the car, there is little space in the planes   to stand up or walk to take rest. The seat backs in the cars and planes also have curves.

Sitting over the extended time slows down the blood circulation and reduces the supply of oxygen in the lower back, which is vital to keep it strong.

How to prevent lower back pain when sitting

The best way is to stand up, stretch and walk for a few minutes to ease out the tension of sitting in the same posture. Instead of doing so, people bend forward and keep working. Standing or stretching for a few moments can speed up the blood circulation and recharge the body with a new energy to work.

What causes the low back pain?

Low back pain is often caused when you overstretch or twist your back to lift heavy objects that are beyond your normal strength. The muscles and vertebral discs in the spinal column experience strains, sprains or spasm and are, sometimes, injured. The injury may rupture a disc which gets herniated or bulged out.

There are more than 50 nerves in the spinal cord. When the disc bulges out it presses against the root of one of more of these nerves. These nerves are so soft and sensitive that they send shooting pains in the back as soon as they are compressed.

How to get relief from low back pain

1. Give rest to your back. As soon as you feel pain in your low back, you should lie down with your back on the floor. Put one or two pillows below your knees.

You may also put your lower legs on the seat of a chair.

This will lift your hip upwards, bring your back flat on the floor, take the pressure off your back and give it the much needed rest.

2. Stretch your back

Lie down with your face towards the floor. Place your hands on the floor and raise your upper body. This will slightly arch your back.

Hold on in this position for 10 seconds and come back to the original posture. Repeat this exercise for 10-15 times. It will stretch the back muscles and relieve you of the pain.

3. Use of pain balms and over- the- counter medicines

You can massage the affected area with pain balm and also take over-the-counter or non-prescribed pain killers such as aspirin.

4. Hot treatment

You can place a wrapped hot water bottle or a heating pad on the back. This will dilate the blood vessels, increase the blood supply and also soothe and relax the tensed muscles.

Cycling is often recommended as one of the best exercises to build strong body. It strengthens all the important organs, hands, arms, shoulders, chest, back, hips, thighs, knees, legs and feet.

Strangely enough, cycling also causes lower back pain and several other health problems. It nullifies all the benefits that it provides to the cyclists. In some cases cycling is the only cause of lower back pain.

How does cycling cause lower back pain?

There is nothing wrong with cycling as an exercise as such. It does provide all the benefits associated with it. The problem arises with the design and structure of most bicycles. It forces the cyclists to assume wrong postures as they try to keep themselves in alignment with their various parts such as seat, stem length, the top tube, frame, handle bar, pedals and so on.

The problem aggravates further with the modern style bicycles whose manufacturers devote more attention to make them look fashionable and stylish rather than ergonomic.

Most of the time, you have to keep bending forward on your lower back in order to exert force on the pedals. This causes tightness in the muscles of the hips, thighs and legs. It forces the pelvis to shift out of its normal and optimal position. This results in muscle imbalance which causes lower back pain.

The position of the seat, its distance from the handle bar and the pedals may not match the length of arms and legs of all the riders. They may have to overstretch or cramp themselves to adjust with it in order to keep cycling.

 Prevention of bicycle back pain

Bicycles come in standard designs for various age groups. It is not always possible to customize each of its parts to suit the individual’s physical needs.  Nonetheless, every cyclist should try to make some adjustment to prevent strain on the lower back.

It is generally possible to shorten the top tube, raise the height of the handlebars and lower the height of the seat and pedals. When you buy a cycle, ask your vendor “to table” its frame to align correctly with your physical needs.

Treating the cycling lower back pain

Assuming that you have contracted lower back pain from cycling, you should stop cycling and take to alternative exercises such as swimming and jogging to counter its adverse effects. In case you cannot stop cycling, you should keep doing stretches and abdominal exercises to keep your back healthy.
