Most pain is felt in the joints or the point where a muscle attaches to the bone. With the back for example, although the upper back is by no means excluded, it is the lower joints that seem to be much more susceptible to pain because this is the centre of our core.
The joints are the one place where an imbalance can manifest because they can be put out of alignment with a tilt or twist. What happens to the nerve, ligament, a muscle or disc as a result of that joint moving, is the back pain or sciatica you normally feel.
If the muscles that set up the imbalances (usually the deeper structural muscles) are worked on correctly, the pressure that causes the twist, tilt or tightness is released, along with the pain.
When a back develops problems it is not normally something that has just happened but rather the result of a build up of tension and muscle problems over time. It tends to involve the whole body eventually and therefore requires a holistic approach and treating the whole body to get a lasting cure. This is especially true when dealing with conditions like back pain and sciatica.
Due to the repetitive nature of bodywork and the fact that the basic anatomy of the body never changes, a therapist is constantly learning how every different type of body feels, whether it be strong, healthy, weak, stressed, young or old. Believe it or not you can even get a clue to what a person eats and their personality from the feel of their tissue.
Any therapist who doesn’t get their hands onto the muscles and body regularly, which is most of them including, doctors, physiotherapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, Pilates or yoga instructors and personal trainers etc, is severely handicapped right from the start when it comes to successfully treating back pain or sciatica. There is no way, without the vital information you get from the feel of the body, they could confidently develop a treatment plan that best approaches a particular person’s back pain or sciatica. Even diagnosing it accurately without feeling the muscles would be extremely difficult.
Working with my hands on the body has taught me things I have never seen in the text books, just as it has taught me that some things I have seen in books are not correct. As most text books are written by academics with science backgrounds that doesn’t surprise me, but it is also bad news for the poor sciatica or back pain sufferer who is looking for a cure, or the therapist who’s looking to learn the right way to deliver that cure.
Part of my training included learning the points in the body that stimulate and revitalise weak flaccid muscles so that they start to function properly again. Plus the way to work to release built up tension or stress by helping the muscles to completely let go, in contrast to relaxing them which is only a temporary change.

The body can be affected by numerous physical conditions and problems. However, few of them are as painful and difficult to live with as lower back pain. It can be almost impossible to avoid straining the lower back because the lower back is part of the body’s core muscles. This results in the lower back being affected whenever the body moves. Here is a solution for people dealing with lower back pain: an acupressure mat is effective at reducing this type of discomfort.
The area above the quadriceps and below the ribcage is the approximate location of Lower Back Pain. This is the part of the back a person uses whenever a physical task is performed, and that fact gives rise to the potential for back strains and other types of injuries. Some might be minor, but there is a possibility of injuries that are more severe. The muscles of the back are used whenever the body moves, and that makes it difficult to avoid lower back problems.
It is difficult to overlook the symptoms of Lower Back Pain. Stiffness and back spasms are normally a major signal of a possible problem. Naturally, sharp pain would be the most obvious symptom of a serious problem or injury in the lower back. Even pain that is duller can mean a serious problem if it hangs on and does not stop within a reasonable period of time. It is certainly not recommended to ignore these types of problems, because an injury could worsen if it is not treated in a timely manner. It is best to obtain the help of a physician when major back problems occur. When the problems are minor, however, an acupressure mat can successfully deal with lower back pain issues.
For people who are unfamiliar with acupressure, it is an ancient technique that applies pressure to the body’s meridian points in order to alleviate pain and tension. It is traditionally performed using massage therapy and has long been proven to effectively provide relief for lower back pain. Now, acupressure can be applied using an acupressure mat, which is an ingenious device designed to deliver the same type of benefits as a traditional acupressure massage.
As its name indicates, an acupressure mat applies the same type of pressure as an acupressure massage. The only difference between the two is the way the pressure is delivered: an acupressure mat vibrates to apply the pressure. Using an acupressure mat is also extremely convenient. The mat can be used whenever you like, providing effective relief for the lower back pain you are experiencing. You will be happy to achieve this relief, considering the serious problems that lower back pain can cause.
People use many methods to alleviate their lower back pain. One of the most accessible and effective methods is an acupressure mat. People who are experiencing problems with common lower back pain are advised to inquire about the availability of these mats.

Back pain is among the most common of all medical conditions. Unfortunately, because there are often no externally visible signs, it is difficult to diagnose. Chronic back pain symptoms can be extremely debilitating as the slightest movement can cause almost unbearable pain. Even mild back pain can be hard to bear.
CAUSES
The most common causes of back injuries are heavy lifting, not lifting using the correct technique and other strenuous activities like some sports. Even poor posture or having an unsuitable mattress can cause pain in the back.
Because pain in the lumbar region is hard to diagnose, quite often the only immediate pain management option can be from pain killers. However, there are other remedies that can provide relief. These include massage, exercise, chiropractic procedures. acupuncture, physiotherapy and, as already mentioned, pain killers. As a last resort, surgery is an option.
It is very important before starting any form of treatment that you eliminate any areas that could potentially be the cause of your back problem. Failure to do this can make any treatment ineffective as you will be continually causing the very thing you are trying to remedy. Look at simple things like your mattress, is it too firm or soft; your car seat, does it need adjusting so you sit in a more upright, natural position when driving; is there something at your work that could be causing the problem?
Let’s look at some of these other remedies for back problems:
MEDICATION
In the case of very serious back pain your medial practitioner will prescribe pain killers and anti-inflammatories that can target specific areas. There are, however, over the counter or non-prescription drugs that can be very helpful in relieving the pain and symptoms. One such medication is Ibuprofen, sometimes also marketed as Nurofen. Another is Acetaminophen, used in many non-prescription medications like Tylenol. These should be treated only as a short term solution and, of-course, should only be taken as directed. One reason why these medications are so popular is because they can provide very quick pain relief in some cases.
EXERCISE
Back exercises can be very beneficial in your treatment of back pain. Although you would think that exercise would be more likely to exacerbate the injury causing the pain, in many instances it has the opposite effect. Basically, exercises increase the amount of nutrition made available to the spinal discs which helps to strengthen the back and alleviate pain. Yoga is one sort of exercise that may be beneficial as it both increases muscular strength as well as flexibility. Tai Chi is another. Of-course, not all exercises are suitable and it would be advisable to consult a professional to get proper advice before embarking on any exercise regimen.
ACUPUNCTURE
Based on ancient Chinese medicine, acupuncture used to be thought of as too “alternative” but has since proved to be effective in relieving the symptoms and pain of back injuries in many cases and often allowing recipients of this treatment to decrease or discard their pain relieving drugs.
POSTURE
These days most of us spend a great deal of time sitting at desks. It is important to ensure you adopt a good posture which can not only help reduce pain but also prevent it in the first place. Many causes of back pain are as a result of bad posture. A good sitting posture is to sit erect with your back straight and both feet flat on the floor. When standing, also try to ensure you back is straight and head erect. Consider your sitting position when driving your car as well.
MASSAGE
Massage therapy conducted by a qualified practitioner will help to relieve tension in the back muscles. In other words the back muscles relax which can have a dramatic effect on the level of pain. It is unusual for massage to completely eliminate pain and so some pain killers may also need to be taken.
SURGERY
These days surgery is usually only recommended as a last resort and in the cases of very serious and debilitating back injury where there is chronic back pain. Back surgery has shown some spectacular results but it must be considered very carefully as there are no guarantees. Your medical practitioner will be able to inform you of the pros and cons of going down this track.
These are ways of treating and reducing your back pain but, if the pain persists, it could be a sign of something more serious, like sciatica or herniated disc, and you should consult a health care professional. Also, do not attempt any of the above remedies without first seeking medical advice.
